The lives of eight Wellingtonians are n disarray after a major fire on Sunday

It took 19 fire crews to extinguish the blaze that engulfed a Hanson Street address, gutted the house next door, and damaged two other properties.

Bill Guthrie owns the destroyed neighbouring house - and says they've managed to find the four tenants a place to stay.

Four tenants have also been evacuated from another one nearby properties with asbestos concerns, and are staying in a hotel.

Guthrie says it's a devastating loss, but he's grateful one house - and all his tenants - survived.

He says the fire brigade did the great job of saving the building, and he understands two firefighters were injured in doing so.
