Meg Lanning stars for Capitals but Ash Gardner-led Giants claim WPL victory

Meg Lanning posted her highest score in the WPL, but it was not enough to get the Delhi Capitals over the line against Ash Gardner's Gujarat Giants.

Australian great Meg Lanning has posted her highest score in India's Women's Premier League (WPL), but it was not enough to get the Delhi Capitals over the line against Gujarat Giants.

Capitals skipper Lanning made a blistering 92 from 57 deliveries at the top of the order, helping her side make 5-177 from their 20 overs in Lucknow.

But the Giants — captained by Australia all-rounder Ash Gardner — overhauled the Capitals' total with three balls to spare as they recorded a five-wicket win.

Gardner made 22, while another Australian, Beth Mooney, scored 44 (from 35 deliveries) opening the batting for the Giants.

Lanning's knock — featuring 15 fours and a six — took her to 939 WPL career runs and past her former Australia teammate Ellyse Perry in their fascinating duel to be the league's most prolific batter.

The Capitals had already qualified as one of the three teams to reach the knockout stages.

Lanning had been hoping to nail down the win that would almost have sent her side directly into the tournament final.

She reached the last over of the Capitals' innings needing 16 to reach a century and it looked a possibility when she hit Deandra Dottin for two fours.

But a slower ball from Dottin saw Lanning bowled after scoring the fifth-highest individual score in the WPL's short history.

Australia's Jess Jonassen had earlier made 9 for the Capitals, before claiming 2-38 with the ball during the Giants' innings.
