North Korea fires ballistic missiles a week before leaders meet in South Korea

The launch comes days before South Korea hosts APEC and world leaders including the US and Chinese presidents.

North Korea has fired what appeared to be multiple short-range ballistic missiles, South Korea's military has said.

It was the first launch of ballistic missiles since May by Pyongyang.

A statement from South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says the weapons were fired from an area near the North Korean capital.

It said several projectiles were detected flying in a north-eastern direction.

Japan's new prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, confirmed that there had been no reports of damage caused by the launches.

She told reporters that none of the North Korean missiles reached Japan's territorial waters or exclusive economic zone.

The launches come ahead of world leaders including US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping arriving in South Korea for talks next week.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum is being held in the South Korean city of Gyeongju.

Earlier this month, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un displayed a new intercontinental ballistic missile at a military parade attended by Chinese, Russian and other top officials.

The event marked the 80th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers' Party.
