Fire and Emergency shift manager Carlos Dempsey says crews were called to the airport just before 7am to reports of smoke in the cockpit.

However, he says their crews have since been stood down, and the matter's been referred to the Airport Fire Service for investigation.

An Air New Zealand spokesperson says smoke was reported on the aircraft before anyone boarded the 7.15am flight to Auckland.

Another aircraft will operate the service.
