    Fire crews are expected to remain on the ground at Canterbury's Lewis Pass Road over the coming days


    Fire and Emergency New Zealand was alerted to a large vegetation fire in the Island Hills at about 2:30 yesterday afternoon.

    The blaze - which grew to 40-hectares in size - is now 80 percent contained and 60 percent controlled.

    Three properties were evacuated - but no structures or livestock were lost.
