Police believe a truck travelling southbound between Bombay and Ramarama blew a tyre before crashing through the median barrier.
It collided with a van and two other vehicles travelling north.
Counties Manukau Inspector Tony Wakelin says the three killed were aged 45, 37 and 32 - and died on impact inside the van.
He says formal identification will continue - but Police can confirm they were seasonal workers due to return home to Samoa later this week.
