One person swam to shore and alerted the police early last evening, after a small vessel sank near Puketutu Island.

The person unaccounted for was last seen just before 5pm.

A search was launched with the help from the volunteers, the Coastguard and Auckland Airport's rescue hovercraft.

Police say the search was suspended last night because of darkness, but will continue this morning on air, land, and sea.
