A body has been found near Ohope Beach, thought to be the man who fled from Police on Christmas night

A body has been found near Ohope Beach, thought to be the man who fled from Police on Christmas night

The 48-year-old Whakatane man ran away from officers and jumped into Ohiwa Harbour, after they were called to a family harm-related incident.

A search has been ongoing since, with a body discovered overnight near the mouth of the harbour east of Ohope Beach.

Eastern Bay of Plenty Area Commander Inspector Nicky Cooney says a formal identification process is still ongoing.

She says the death will be referred to the coroner.
