The New Zealand Maori Council says Maori are making up a statistic they don't want

The New Zealand Maori Council says Maori are making up a statistic they don't want

Latest suicide figures show 668 people have died in the last year - the highest since records began.

One hundred and forty-two of them were Maori - also the highest figure recorded, with 97 of them Maori men.

Council chair Matthew Tukaki wants to see a national workforce development strategy.

He says we need to have a honest conversation about the reforms required of the mental health care system and provision of service.
