Christchurch City Council's proposing to return ownership of a Maori burial ground to local hapu

Christchurch City Council's proposing to return ownership of a Maori burial ground to local hapu

It's seeking feedback from residents, on returning a 1300-square-metre section in Diamond Harbour's Purau to Ngati Wheke.

There's been ongoing discussion about returning the land for more than a century.

The council's Bruce Rendell says the hapu could use and protect the land in a way that respects its cultural history, if it's returned.

Public submissions close on December 1.
