State Highway 16 remains closed at Makarau, north-west of Auckland, after the discovery of a body

State Highway 16 remains closed at Makarau, north-west of Auckland, after the discovery of a body

Police want to hear from anyone who saw a pedestrian in the area between midnight and 5.30am, or has dashcam or CCTV footage.

The death hasn't yet been included in the official summer holiday road toll - which stands at five, after a fatal crash south of Paeroa overnight.

National Road Policing Manager Steve Greally says fatal crashes are thankfully becoming less common - a trend Police hope will continue.

He says reducing the road toll means Police are going to fewer traumatic scenes, and breaking traumatic news to fewer families.
