    Large fires are still burning across Southland and Otago -as high winds fuel their spread


    Thirty firefighters and two helicopters are still at a paddock fire on Johnston Road near Balclutha - and will remain there into the evening.

    Ten trucks and two helicopters are working on a large forestry blaze near Mataura.

    It's forced State Highway 96 to close overnight between State Highway One and Waimumu Road.

    Further north, 10 trucks and three helicopters are responding to an out of control pine fire near Goodwood, reported about 2.30 - burning over multiple hectares.
