The body of three-year-old Lachlan Jones was found in a council oxidation pond about a kilometre from his home.
Police investigations concluded he walked there himself.
The pathologist told the court they were reluctant to carry out the little boy's autopsy.
They hadn't carried out many child autopsies while working in New Zealand, as they're normally done by specialists.
The 15-day inquest in Invercargill finishes tomorrow.
