Doubt from a cycling advocate that advice for cyclists to be more assertive on the road, is practical

The advice has come from Waka Kotahi during an inquest into the death of a man hit by a truck and trailer unit on the outer edge of a Hamilton roundabout in 2017.

Principal adviser Simon Kennett told the inquest that "taking the lane" was the term used for a cyclist moving into the centre at a roundabout, and saying it's deemed the safest option.

But Movement Group Chair Christine Rose says cyclists already feel vulnerable on the roads - especially when confronted with pinch points against trucks.

She says it's not realistic to expect cyclists to feel confident enough to take the lane themselves.
