Auckland Council is welcoming its new chief executive - Phil Wilson

Mayor Wayne Brown says Wilson's depth of knowledge on the politics of local government and how council works makes him the right candidate.

Wilson began working for Auckland Council in 2010 as the Mayoral Office's chief of staff.

He was promoted to director of governance and council-controlled organisation partnerships in 2015, which is his most recent executive position.

Wilson replaces Jim Stabback, who announced his departure in February.
