    The owners of the Tiwai aluminium smelter have announced a strategic review of the operation - including the option of closure


    The revelation comes from Meridian Energy this morning in an announcement to shareholders.

    The smelter is the country's largest electricity consumer and is a Meridian customer..

    Meridian says the smelter's owners, Rio Tinto, have have told them it will provide a market update on the strategic review by the end of the first quarter next year.
