Crowded Kiwis households are getting more common

Crowded Kiwis households are getting more common

Stats NZ says Census data shows conditions were cramped in more than 100-thousand households in 2023 - or 6.2 percent.

In 2018, that figure was 5.7 percent - up from five percent in 2013.

Crowding is measured by things including how many people share a room, or bedroom.

Principal analyst, Rosemary Goodyear, says the increase is concerning - as it can affect physical health, and is a risk factor for diseases.
