New Zealand's economy's been shrinking, but our largest company has seen profits surge

New Zealand's economy's been shrinking, but our largest company has seen profits surge

    Fonterra
    Fonterra
Fonterra's announced a 13-percent rise in annual operating profit.

Its cash return to shareholders is up 30.6 percent, and its final farmgate milk payout to farmers has reached a new record high of 10-dollars-16.

Chief Executive Miles Hurrell says some people used to talk about dairy as a "sunset industry" but that seems laughable now.

He says they're trying to do their bit of heavy-lifting for the economy, and the decent prices reflect strong global demand for New Zealand dairy.
