It's looking likely the men's and women's A-Leagues will be short a team for the upcoming season

That's after it was confirmed that Western United have been stripped of their licence by Football Australia ... leaving the embattled club on the brink of folding ... over ongoing financial turmoil.

Players and staff at the Western Melbourne outfit have been paid late, and superannuation payments also delayed.

They've also been unable to register players due to a FIFA ban over a player dispute.

Founded in 20-18, their men's side won the A-League in 20-22.

Western United now have seven days to appeal the decision.
