Former Maori All Black Shane Christie has died in Nelson, aged 39

Former Maori All Black Shane Christie has died in Nelson, aged 39

Friends of Christie have told NZME it was believed his death was self-inflicted and came after a period during which concern over his wellbeing had increased.

Christie was an advocate for greater focus on the damage repeated head injuries can have, after a playing career that saw him play more than 70 times for Tasman as well as a title-winning stint with the Highlanders.

Christie had previously told the Herald he wanted his brain to be studied after his death to see if he had CTE.

New Zealand Rugby has released a statement, saying Christie's passion for the game will be always remembered and their thoughts are with Christie's whanau, friends and former teammates.
