Sam Tanner's win over teen star Sam Ruthe in the New Zealand Mile Championships at the Cooks Classic has come with a cherry on top

Sam Tanner's win over teen star Sam Ruthe in the New Zealand Mile Championships at the Cooks Classic has come with a cherry on top

The two-time Olympian sat on the 16-year-old's shoulder for much of the race before unleashing the winning sprint around the final bend in Whanganui.

Tanner finished in a rapid 3:53.36 seconds - but says his focus was elsewhere.

Ruthe clocked 3.53.83 to become the fastest ever 16-year-old over the mile distance.
