Emotions are running high in Wellington, where the mayoral race is still too close to call

Emotions are running high in Wellington, where the mayoral race is still too close to call

Andy Foster has a narrow lead over incumbent Labour Party mayor Justin Lester, with 90-percent of votes counted so far.

Emme McKay is at Lester's campaign event..

Mr Lester broke down in tears, in a speech to supporters a short time ago.

Labour Party councillor Brian Dawson has also spoken at the event, after losing his Lambton Ward seat.

Mr Dawson used his concession speech to thank his partner for her support -- by getting down on one knee to propose to her.

Auckland mayor Phil Goff and Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel have won re-election.

Christchurch City Councillor Deon Swiggs has lost his seat, following allegations he sent inappropriate messages to young people.

28-year-old Campbell Barry has ousted Lower Hutt mayor Ray Wallace and becomes our youngest mayor ever.

Paula Southgate is the new mayor of Hamilton, and Aaron Hawkins is the new mayor of Dunedin.
