A multi-million dollar fix for Wellington's central library is expected to be signed off today - despite many wanting to see the building torn down

A multi-million dollar fix for Wellington's central library is expected to be signed off today - despite many wanting to see the building torn down

City Councillors are voting on whether to strengthen the existing building or demolish and build anew.

The recommendation is to save the building and strengthen it to the highest level - at a cost of 178-million dollars.

But public consultation shows residents would prefer a new building on the same site.

The council received more than 14-hundred public submissions on the issue, with a rebuild receiving the most support, followed closely by the expensive strengthening.
