Concerns over how much another public holiday will impact businesses

Concerns over how much another public holiday will impact businesses

Matariki is estimated to cost businesses between 337 and 448 million dollars - about double the amount initially projected by the Employers and Manufacturers Association.

It will be celebrated as a public holiday for the first time next year.

Chief Executive Brett O'Riley says it seems good at face value, but from the perspective of employers - it's incredibly damaging.

He says we'd all like another public holiday, but the country can't rely on printing money as a way of surviving long term.
