NZ's managed to avoid being dictated to by US - which has told our neighbour and Five Eyes ally to lift defence spending to to 3.5 percent of GDP

New Zealand's managed to avoid being dictated to by the US - which has told our neighbour and Five Eyes ally to lift defence spending to to 3.5 percent of GDP

Australia's Anthony Albanese says his country won't be dictated to - and is already tracking towards 2.3 percent of GDP in the next eight years.

Prime Minister Chris Luxon says the US recognises our defence capabilities have degraded - and it's comfortable with our position.

He says we're on the path to get to two percent in eight years which is a good start - but we've got to keep an eye on it and be prepared to spend more if needed.
