Calls for more cash to go towards promoting local elections - to cure low voter turnout

A group chaired by Nelson Mayor Nick Smith's recommending the Electoral Commission take over promoting and running local elections.

They've been floating the idea at the Local Government New Zealand conference in Christchurch.

Environment Canterbury Chair Craig Pauling is on board.

He says they don't promote local body elections enough, partly because councils don't have the money.
