Southland is getting a good chunk of funding to help fill the gaps in seismic information, that will address hazards and preparedness.
Researcher Dr Caroline Orchiston says there are gaps because it's not the most seismically active area in the country.
She says the research in the past has looked at places like Wellington and Christchurch which have seen the most recent action.
