The latest Liley Medal winner is hoping the accolade will shine a light on rheumatic fever in New Zealand

The latest Liley Medal winner is hoping the accolade will shine a light on rheumatic fever in New Zealand

Professor Michael Baker and his team of around 20 were awarded the prestigious prize at Government House last night, for their breakthrough research into the causes of the disease.

He wants to draw attention to the unequal presentation of the disease - most common amongst Maori and Pacific children aged five to 15.

Baker says the disease is preventable, and shouldn't be in New Zealand.

He says their research shows the disease has strong links with factors such as crowded living, skin infections, and drinking sugary drinks.
