Unintended consequences of the shift towards telehealth services as a solution to workforce shortages - particularly in rural areas

Unintended consequences of the shift towards telehealth services as a solution to workforce shortages - particularly in rural areas

Auckland University Associate Dean of Rural Health Dr Kyle Eggleton says it's helpful for patients who struggle to access a GP, and helps reduce the burden of after hours calls.

But he says there's also a loss of continuity of care, and it's important to see the same doctor most of the time - because they hold all the information in their head.

Eggleton says for those with chronic disease or complex issues, having a relationship with a doctor improves how long you live for.
