A drop in the number of assault related hospitalisations over the weekend is being linked to the recent changes to the sale of alcohol

New research from Otago University shows the rate of hospitalisations amongst 15 to 29 year olds has declined by 18 per cent since 2013.

It follows the introduction of regulations which saw bars close at 4am -- and a ban on takeaway alcohol sales after 11pm.

Now Alcohol Action New Zealand spokesperson Doug Sellman is advocating for further changes.

He says cafes bars and restaurants should only be able to sell alcohol from ten in the morning to one the following morning -- and 10am to 10 pm for off licences.
