Former MP Hone Harawira says it's concerning their iwi checkpoints were shut down before the long weekend

Former MP Hone Harawira says it's concerning their iwi checkpoints were shut down before the long weekend

Police put a halt to Tai Tokerau Border Control's 'information' centres on State Highway 1 south of Kawakawa yesterday.

Harawira says they were giving out pamphlets with information about Covid strains and testing sites.

He says Auckland Anniversary and Waitangi weekend are some of Northland's busiest.

Harawira says tens of thousands of visitors will flood in - and 95 per cent from where the South African variant is.

Harawira claimed the checkpoints may've been stopped due to him revealing on Newstalk ZB, that he knew of new community cases.

Police say they engaged with the group when attempts were made to prevent traffic flowing and they willingly complied and left the area.
