A person has died near the Carterton's New World after a shooting just after 4pm

A person has died near the Carterton's New World after a shooting just after 4pm

Carterton mayor Ron Mark says the person arrived in the main street in a vehicle with a gunshot wound, before passing away.

Police say they're speaking with two people, and there's no ongoing risk to the general public.

Three separate cordons are in place in Featherston, Carterton, and Kaitoke, as officers conduct scene examinations.

State Highway 2 through Featherston and Carterton is closed and it's down to one lane through Kaitoke.

New World Carterton's Facebook page says the store's closed until further notice.
