Censure for a rest home company after a man in his 80s died in respite care

Censure for a rest home company after a man in his 80s died in respite care

The day after the man was admitted to the home, he became unable to move and complained of abdominal pain, but nurses did not review his care.

He was later diagnosed with a perforated small intestine - and died in hospital the next day.

Deputy Health and Disability Commissioner Rose Wall found aspects of his care were inadequate - and recommended changes to pain assessment, management and monitoring.

She says the case highlights how aged patients can deteriorate.
