From mid-April, NASA will be working to perfect the super-pressure helium-filled balloon - which is about the size of Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium.
They hope to be certified as a long-duration flight vehicle - which is key to supporting more complex science missions.
The launches aim to help a 2021 mission to determine the life cycle of interstellar gas in our galaxy.
