A man has been arrested after allegedly burning down multiple classrooms at a Whakatane school

The fire occurred in the early hours of February 6, destroying an office block and eight attached classrooms at Apanui Primary School.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested in Tauranga this morning and he's due to appear in the Whakatane District Court tomorrow.

He's charged with arson and burglary, and a further charge of aggravated robbery from an unrelated incident.

Eastern Bay of Plenty, Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Wilson says the offence is one that has hurt the whole community.
