A Rolleston school is raising concerns for child safety as upgrades to a nearby highway begin

The Transport Agency's 200-million dollar, State Highway 1 project involves multiple roundabouts and new on and offramps.

The Press reports up to 80 percent of West Rolleston Primary School pupils walk, cycle, skate, or scooter to class every day.

It says the number of vehicles driving past will jump 300 percent when the roundabouts are complete.

School board member Rob Hunt says the road was already dangerous on a good day.
