Hopes the new government can do one better than successive ones on secondary teacher shortages

Hopes the new government can do one better than successive ones on secondary teacher shortages

The Education Ministry is projecting supply to broadly meet demand in medium and high scenarios over the next two years, not in a low one.

It also expects shortages in some locations and subjects, namely science, technology, maths and te reo Maori.

PPTA acting president Chris Abercrombie says it's no surprise successive governments haven't really done anything effective to address it.

He says they'll get something really positive now and then, but it disappears when governments and priorities change.
