With construction projects on hold, Fletchers has given some staff only 24 hours to consider gradual pay cuts of up to 70 percent.
Fletcher executives are taking a 15 percent pay cut over three months.
Minister of Infrastructure Shane Jones says in times of hardship companies shouldn't be cutting their workforce so the executives can avoid the impacts.
Mr Jones asks why would you have any confidence in the future of Fletcher Building leadership because of the way they have destroyed their own workforce.
