A scenic flight operator accused of health and safety breaches in the lead up to the Whakaari eruption has pleaded guilty

A scenic flight operator accused of health and safety breaches in the lead up to the Whakaari eruption has pleaded guilty

Inflite - which is based in Auckland - has been ordered to pay more than a quarter million dollars in fines at the Auckland District Court today.

The remaining 12 defendants charged have all pleaded not guilty, and a four-month trial has been laid down for July 2023.

It includes the island's owner Whakaari Management Limited and its directors, GNS Science and White Island Tours.

The charges do not relate to events on the day of the eruption, or the rescue efforts.

Of the 47 people on the volcano when it erupted in December 2019, 22 people died.
