Calls for tougher pool safety rules at retirement homes, after an investigation into a 2019 drowning

Resident Verna Latimer was able to access her Auckland retirement home pool unsupervised, and wasn't discovered until hours after she drowned.
Open Justice reports the pool's CCTV was linked to the reception computer, but wasn't actively monitored.
Coroner Tania Tetitaha says this showed similarities to another retirement home drowning she'd investigated, including a non-self closing door, and a lack of water safety training for staff and residents.
