Fire and Emergency want people to spark up a conversation about fire safety this Christmas

Fire and Emergency want people to spark up a conversation about fire safety this Christmas

Topics include creating a three-step escape plan, checking smoke alarms and not overloading multi-boards.

They particularly want older family members involved.

Community Education Manager Tom Ronaldson says over the last five years, 55 percent of house fire fatalities were people over 60-years-old.

He says it's important to have these conversations with older people, as they're particularly vulnerable to the risks of fire.
