Selena Gomez has voted in a US presidential election for the first time

The 28-year-old star confessed that she had never bothered going to the polls previously as she felt her vote didn't particularly count, but has changed her mind ahead of the 2020 vote next month

During an appearance on Voting Power Hour, Selena said: "Honestly, I'm not ashamed to say this.

"But... I'm kind of... This was my first time."

The 'Rare' singer revealed that she had the idea that her vote wouldn't make much difference in an election.

Selena explained: "I'm going to say that because I never felt – and this is so true – and I'm now like admitting to people, like my vote counts. Like, every little thing counts so I just think some people get in their head, like, oh well, what does it matter?"

Gomez added that she is now "invested" in encouraging other to realise the importance of their vote.

She said: "My main focus has been this right now. You can tell on my social media and everything , obviously, I'm super invested in this right now. It's been good. I feel hopeful."

Selena also revealed that she had been asking people on her projects if they are registered to vote.

She recalled: "I had a few music videos I had to do (this year), and it was hysterical because I would walk in, and everyone – I'm like the nicest person so it's fine – but like I literally, man, I said, I looked at everyone and said, 'Is everyone registered to vote?'

"And like they all paused, giving me like a (look), and I'm just, 'Have you?' (They're) like 'y-yeah'. And I'm like, 'Thank you, you can continue with the shoot.'"
