Selena Gomez found it "scary" to be so open about her mental health journey

The 32-year-old beauty has been candid about her mental health struggles in recent years, but Selena admits that it was "scary to be that vulnerable".

The 'Wolves' hitmaker - who has been open about her struggles with both anxiety and depression - told Billboard: "At the end of the day I believe it matters to be vocal about issues that matter to you, whether you are famous or not. It's not for the faint of heart, because you are putting yourself out there and trust me there will be a lot of opinions that come at you for even having the nerve to say anything at all.

"I remember when I decided to be open about my own personal mental health, it was scary to be that vulnerable and I didn't ever want anyone to think I am a victim. I thought [that] by sharing my own story I could help others, and I will take any negative opinions that come with that because I see the bigger picture of how the conversations have changed around mental health."

Selena feels she hasn't compromised her values in search of success.

Asked what advice she has for aspiring stars, Selena replied: "Blocking out the noise and being true to yourself.

"The noise can be overwhelming, and I am not saying it's easy but by doing that and not compromising who you are, it goes a long way."

Selena previously claimed that showing vulnerability is "one of the strongest things you can do".

The actress shared her struggles with the world in her 2022 documentary film 'Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me', but Selena admitted that she felt a little nervous about releasing the project.

Selena told 'CBS Sunday Morning': "Once I released it, it felt like a huge relief, because I am a firm believer that one of the strongest things you can do is be vulnerable. And that doesn't mean you have to pour your heart out to everyone.

"But I made that choice, because I knew I wasn't the only one that felt that way. And if my world was already out there for everyone to see, I'd like to tell my part of the story."
