Robert Redford's most notable movies with Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand and Paul Newman

The Hollywood icon leaves a legacy of classic films with a career that stretched over decades.

Hollywood icon Robert Redford has died aged 89, leaving a legacy of classic films with a career that stretched over decades.

Here's a look back at some his movies from the 60s right through until the late 2010s.

    Barefoot in the Park, 1967

A romantic comedy, the film follows the antics of a newlywed couple of misfits — Redford being a conservative, uptight lawyer, and his co-star Jane Fonda being a zany free spirit.

As they settle into married life in their tiny apartment (which is up many, many stairs), they encounter plumbing problems, eccentric neighbours and big challenges for their relationship.

The film has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 81 per cent, with critics praising Redford and Fonda's "effervescent" chemistry.

This was the third film where Redford starred alongside Fonda, with the pair having an enduring friendship right up until Redford's death.

"It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone," Fonda said in a statement.

"I can't stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for."

Fonda and Redford reunited for Netflix film Our Souls At Night in 2017.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1969

One of Redford's most iconic film roles almost didn't happen.

For the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a Western buddy film about outlaws on the run, 20th Century Fox wanted a star like Marlon Brando or Steve McQueen.

But it was at the insistence of co-star Paul Newman that Redford won the role of the Sundance Kid that would launch him into further stardom.

"I was not a name equal to Paul's. I was just sort of moving up at that time," he told the AP in 2015.

"There was a big argument that went on for months and months.

"They said it had to be a star. [Newman] said, 'Well, I want to work with an actor,' because Paul respected acting.

"Had it not been for Paul, I would not have gotten that break."

The movie was also where the pair became life-long friends, known for playing elaborate pranks on one another.

Shortly before his death of lung cancer in 2008, Newman sent Redford a letter thanking him for his companionship and support with the line "You were the Sundance to my Cassidy — always".

The film is regarded as one of the best Westerns ever made and received four Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song and Best Original Screenplay.

It was the highest-grossing film of 1969.

    The Way We Were, 1973

Redford plays Hubbell Gardiner and Barbra Streisand plays Katie, who are complete opposites on the political spectrum and rivals in college.

And while those opposites are eventually attracted to each other, the romance is ultimately doomed.

Modern audiences will likely be outraged by the scene where a sober Katie slips into bed and seduces a heavily drunk, partially conscious Hubbell.

However, the film's reputation as an epic romance endures thanks to the pair's chemistry, its soundtrack and a cult-favourite episode of Sex and the City that heavily references the film.

Streisand spoke about the film when paying tribute to Redford on social media.

"Every day on the set of The Way We Were was exciting, intense and pure joy.

"We were such opposites: he was from the world of horses; I was allergic to them!

"Yet, we kept trying to find out more about each other, just like the characters in the movie.

"He was one of a kind and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him."

    All the President's Men, 1976

In the 1976 political thriller All the President's Men, Redford took on the role as investigative journalist Bob Woodward who did much of the original reporting on the Watergate Scandal that led to the impeachment and resignation of president Richard Nixon.

He starred alongside Dustin Hoffman, who played fellow journalist Carl Bernstein.

According to AP, Redford became fascinated with the saga during a tour for another film where he overheard journalists discussing the break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters.

He later said he also became captivated by the working relationship of Woodward and Bernstein.

"I wanted to know who these guys were, who created all this disturbance," Redford told AP.

"I thought, 'Wow, one guy was a Jew, one guy was a WASP.'

"One guy was a Republican, the other guy was a liberal. One guy was a good writer, the other wasn't very good.

"They didn't like each other, but they had to work together. Now that's an interesting dynamic I'd love to know about."

The film has been credited with popularising the catchphrase "follow the money".

    Out of Africa, 1985

Redford starred opposite Meryl Streep in the Oscar-winning historical romance Out of Africa.

Streep plays Karen Blixen, a Danish Baroness in colonial Kenya who has a love affair with a free-spirited big game hunter, Redford's character, Denys Finch Hatton.

It won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Sound at the 1985 Academy Awards.

Steep referenced the film when paying tribute to Redford.

"One of the lions has passed. Rest in peace my lovely friend," she said.

    The Horse Whisperer, 1998

Redford stars as an enigmatic horse trainer alongside a young Scarlett Johansson.

Johansson's character Grace is left traumatised with an amputated leg after a crash kills her best friend (a young Kate Bosworth) while the pair were horse riding.

Also injured in the crash, Grace's horse is uncontrollable but, rather than having it put down, Grace's mother tracks down a "horse whisperer" to rehabilitate it.

Redford's character Tom reluctantly agrees to help on the condition that Grace is involved and, eventually Tom helps heal the pair of them.

As well as starring in the movie, Redford also directed it — drawing on his real-life skills as a horseman, having ridden horses since childhood.

"At the heart of the story is a man and a horse, and healing for not only himself, but for those around him," Redford wrote in the foreword of equine therapy book Riding Home: The Power of Horses to Heal.

"There's something meditative about communicating with horses, something instinctive where you eventually have to merge into one in order to move forward together."

    Avengers: Endgame, 2019

While it may not be his most iconic role, Redford's final on-screen appearance is worth a mention (his last film credit on IMDb is voicing a dolphin monster in indie film Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasia).

In the 2019 movie, he reprises the role of Alexander Pierce, the former secretary of a special government law enforcement agency called S.H.I.E.L.D.

Redford joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014 in the film Captain America and the Winter Soldier, gaining him notoriety with a whole new generation of audiences.

His appearance in Endgame reprised that role.

"Redford's performance transformed Pierce into one of Marvel's most memorable on-screen antagonists, imbuing the role with charm and gravitas as only he could," Marvel Studios said in a statement about his death.

"We are deeply saddened to hear of his passing."
