Kevin Bacon lived in a $150-a-month "flophouse" when he first moved to New York City

The 65-year-old actor has recalled moving to the Big Apple in 1976 and, after four months sleeping on his sister's couch, he needed to find his own place on a meagre budget

He told 'The Kelly Clarkson Show': "I don't know how I got the math on that, but that's what I had decided.

"So I saw an ad on the back of the Village Voice, and it said 'Artists, actors, musicians residence,' and I thought, 'Well, that sounds good.' "

He added: "It was basically a flophouse. I guess there were some artists there, but not a lot."

The 'Footloose' star even ended up having to live with someone he met at the rental office after they were told there were no single-room apartments available.

He revealed: "We lived together for four years. In fact, I just had luch with him the other day."

His roommate was a classical pianist who worked night shifts at the Copacabana, and Kevin found it "really cool" listening to him play at their apartment.

It's a different experience now for the 'Six Degrees With Kevin Bacon' host, who loves spending time at home cooking with his wife Kyra Sedgwick.

He recently told People: "We really switch off. We love to cook, and we love to eat. Cooking and eating together is something that we've always done as a family."

He explained how being in the kitchen at home means he has "control" over what goes into his body.

He added: "I feel like if you're always eating out or you're always getting something to go, then you're always giving your power over to the people that are going to prepare the food for you. I can't do that my whole life."

Kevin has decided to keep pigs, as well as goats, at his Connecticut farmhouse and no longer feels able to put the animals on his plate, which means no more bacon despite his famous moniker.

He said: "I no longer eat goat and I no longer eat pig, because I have goats and I have pigs. My wife is like, 'We can't get any more animals, because you're going to stop eating everything!"
