The 59-year-old actress - who played Charlotte Goldenblatt on 'Sex and the City' - wrote on Instagram: "Just heard that glorious Frances Sternhagen has passed away. She lived a wonderful, full life and was a joy to work with. Thinking of her family."

Sternhagen's death was announced by her family, who revealed that she died "peacefully of natural causes".

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, her family said: "It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear mother, actress Frances Sternhagen, died peacefully of natural causes in New Rochelle, NY, on November 27th, 2023 at the age of 93.

"She is survived by her six children, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A celebration of her remarkable career and life is planned for mid-January, near her 94th birthday. We continue to be inspired by her love and life."

The actress - who was best-known for starring in 'Cheers' and 'Sex and the City' - enjoyed a hugely successful career on stage and screen.
