Diane Lane has described her late co-star Robin Williams as "more than a breath of fresh air"

While reflecting on their time together making the 1996 film Jack, the 60-year-old actress spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her bond with the tragic comic and actor in video filmed at the Newport Beach Film Festival Honors, where she received the ICON Award

When Diane was asked about her memories of Jack, which will mark its 30th anniversary next year, she said: "The man was a breath of, more than fresh air.

"He set the bar so high in terms of good energy."

The Anniversary star also recalled the personal wrap gift Williams gave her when production ended.

She added: "It was a book of all of Shakespeare's writings that he'd signed.

"It holds a very special place in my library because he has that in him. He can do all of it."

Diane continued: "He could do the court jester and King Lear and everything in between. He brought all of it with him. So in that way, I thought the gift was very appropriate coming from him, because he could play all the parts in all the plays."

In Jack, comedian Robin - who died by suicide in 2014 at the age of 63 - played Jack Powell, a boy who ages four times faster than normal, while Diane portrayed his mother, Karen.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, it also featured Jennifer Lopez, Brian Kerwin, Fran Drescher, Michael McKean and Bill Cosby. Upon its release, the film received poor reviews from critics.

Roger Ebert wrote at the time: "Williams works hard at seeming to be a kid inside an adult body, and some of his inspirations work well. But he has been ill-served by a screenplay that isn't curious about what his life would really be like."

However, the film has since found some defenders.

Director Luca Guadagnino told the British Film Institute in 2024 that he considered Jack one of Coppola's overlooked achievements.

He said: "For me, a great director invisibly masters everything he does.

"In Jack, you feel the way in which he's taking this kind of conventional story but bringing humanity, and the way in which the world is created. It's so beautiful."
