Miley Cyrus has called for less competition and more community at awards ceremonies

The Flowers hitmaker used her appearance at the Palm Springs Film Festival recently to address the competitive nature of awards season, telling attendees the industry should focus on collective achievement rather than rivalry.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Miley told the audience: "So often during awards season, we're set up as competitors, but we're meant to be a community, not opponents. There is no single best; it's only our personal best work.

"Numbers can make it feel like a sport, but performance runs so much deeper than a scoreboard, because each artist they bare their soul in a completely unique way, and every contribution leaves its own mark on history."

She added: "Whether you're in or out of this industry, we all have a persona, even the ones that are rooted in authenticity, because self-creation is an art form, and all of us, we perform genuinely.

"That's something that I deeply admire in both award-winning actors and actresses, and the drag queens of Toucans - they're kind of the same."

The 33 year old star recently landed the end credits track Dream As One for Avatar: Fire and Ash after casually telling director James Cameron she was available. She became involved in the project after the pair were both honoured as Disney Legends at the D23 Expo in August 2024, where Miley seized the moment.

Speaking to PEOPLE, she admitted she put the offer on the table: "I kind of throw it out there as I always do.

"I already knew the answer to, 'So what have you been up to?' I know he's been up to Avatar for a very long time."

Miley recalled telling Cameron - who was deep into production on the third Avatar film - to: "Just lemme know if you ever need any music."

The collaboration "organically" happened, she added, joking that Cameron now refers to them as "Legends-in-law".

It's not the first time her direct approach has worked. Miley also penned Beautiful That Way for the 2024 film The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis - a track that went on to earn a Golden Globe nomination.

She laughed: "I did the same thing to Jamie Lee Curtis.

"That's how I ended up doing The Last Showgirl and now being a part of Avatar."

The End of the World singer even attended the Oscars last year with one goal in mind: meeting filmmakers who might need original music.

She admitted: "Everybody that came up and introduced themselves, I said, 'Well, if you need any music, I'm around.'"

Her enthusiasm doesn't stop at film. Miley revealed she even offered her services to the creators of Netflix's Baby Reindeer: "I don't know what I would write for Baby Reindeer season two, but I threw that out there!"

Reflecting on why she loves writing for screen projects, Miley said she's always been drawn to the way music and movies intertwine.

She explained: "I really feel myself attached to songs.

"There are certain songs - even if they were written for the film or just used in the film - like I Will Always Love You, where you immediately think of the movie. They become embedded."
