NZTA's expecting heavy holiday traffic heading out of the capital on State Highway One.
There was concern a new road layout and chipseal would contribute to today's congestion.
Wellington's transport system manager Mark Owen says the road surface at MacKays Crossing has settled down.
He says it's been performing well for northbound traffic.
