Some of Christchurch's broken red zone roads will now be a training track for young drivers

This morning will see the official launch of Te Runanga o Nga Maata Waka's Driving Education Road Network near Shirley's Horseshoe Lake.

It's a closed system - with all the features of real roads.

Runanga CEO Norm Dewes says for many young people - a driver's licence is a ticket to a better future.

He says it's a stepping stone to employment - which is an important step in keeping young, vulnerable people off a path to criminality.

Dewes says Fulton Hogan has helped set up the network - repairing and marking roads and adding signposts at no cost.
